Are nursing homes equipped to handled urinary tract infections?

My father is 78 years old and has had his bladder removed due to cancer. He has frequent UTIs. He recently entered a nursing home. Does he have to go to the hospital for care when he has a UTI?

some nursing homes are also classified as skilled nursing facilities. these facilities should be able to provide iv therapy, feeding tubes, urinary catheters, and other special equipment.

if your nursing home is not a skilled nursing facility, then they will take the resident to the hospital for treatment. he may need iv antibiotics and fluid replacement. the nursing home will hold his bed for a limited number of days while he is hospitalized.

Nursing homes can check urine when UTI is suspected, they then communicate with the doctor who can prescribe the antibiotics if needed, This can all be done with your father in his room, good luck

No, uti can be treated with antibiotics, some good personal hygience and lots of good diet and some love and support.

Most nursing homes in this country are staffed by licensed nurses. They usually stock simple antibiotics and have standing orders from their medical directors to treat UTI. Unless your dad becomes septic, his infections should be easily treated in the home.

yes they can handle UTI's. UTI's are usually not complicated and the treatment for them is quite effective. Nursing homes have physician coverage and they take care of all the medical aspects of care. It somthing is over their head they usually admit to the hospital for extra care. Good Luck .

Ask them.
