Do Old People Sleep all Night in Nursing Homes?

I am the main care taker of my elderly mother. Lately she has been not sleeping at night, then sleeping or napping all day. This is becoming a habit because, try as I might, I just cant get her to stay awake in the day time. Any suggestions? How do they deal with this in homes for the elderly?

Most old people are this way..just put her in bed and let her watch TV..Just having it on sometimes helps older people sleep. In nursing homes, they give out sleeping pills a lot. Is your Mom taking any of these? Are you working and trying to take care of her, too? I think it is a wonderful thing you are trying to do. Maybe talk to the doctor and get her some sleep aids. Keeping a very strict routine for her sleep schedules will help her keep her sleep straightened out.

Older people sleep at different times. Like babies, their schedules are different. In nursing homes, there are always people working who are awake so the clients do not always sleep. They try to get them to relax at night but some places let them watch tv at night if they'd like. Nursing homes take care of the clients but don't make them do things how they want them done. (At least not the good ones)

how do we know what they do?

Only in a perfect world. I used to work midnight shift in a nursing home and some were up half the night. Sorry I can't tell you how to make her sleep at night besides sleeping pills because we just kinda went with the flow.
