Have you heard of a bacterial infection called mercer. It is contracted in nursing homes and hospitals? I think you mean MRSA. In hospital jargon we say "mer-suh". Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. Regular Staph Aureus can be treated with regular penicillin or cephalosporins like Keflex. MRSA is a resistant form of Staph Aureus that is resistant to pretty much everything except vancomycin, a powerful antibiotic. It's very common in hospitals, ICUs, and nursing homes. You can have it in a wound or decubitus ulcer, or as a pneumonia. It's hard to get rid of, and you may need antibiotics for a long time. Hospital staff usually try to prevent passing MRSA from one patient to another by washing their hands and wearing disposable gowns. |
