Nursing home/Home nurse and mental well being?

See my other question on 24 hour nursing for more details, but I'm trying to consider the benefit of trying to have a 24 hour nurse to care for my grandmother or taking her to a nursing facility and the impact the two would have on her mental health.

Any ideas on the conflict between facilities better able to provide physical care versus an in home nurse for the sake of her mental well being?

There is a family history of depression and part of her problem now is that she had an infection and was trying to hide it by not eating (which made things worse). I think alot of that now has to do with depression.

If you can afford to have a 24 hr nurse instead of sending her to a Nursing Home?
by all means.. do it
having Grandma still be able to live in her own home, in her own bed, her own personal possessions/memories is far kinder and easier on her than going to a strange facility
living in a Nursing Home is a very depressing way to live the rest of your life in

It's usually best to let elders remain in their own home but most people can't afford it for long. It's really hard to tell because everyone is unique. You have to look at your grandmother's personality and lifestyle. Some people deal with the move to a nursing home fairly well if they are generally flexible in dealing with other people and change. It can be an advantage to have more staff present. If she doesn't want to eat for one staff person, someone else might be able to coax her. She may also be able to interact with other residents and there will be frequent entertainment and activities. On the other hand, if she has lived in her home for many years, it will be very difficult for her to make the transition. If you do decide on a nursing home, be sure to examine it closely, everything from cleanliness to accounting. Try to have her stay briefly on a trial basis.Whatever you decide, the most important thing is to be there for her. Visit as much as possible. Call her on the phone. Send letters and pictures. Email, even if she needs help to use it, pictures can be blown up for her to see better.

I have been dealing with my Grammy being in 2 nursing homes in the past 3 months and I can tell you the treatment there is not good. If you can afford to have a 24 hour nurse in your grandmothers home I would reccomend it. The lack of caring I have seen in the nurses is astounding. I suppose they get job burnout just like the rest of us but they need to find a new profession if they think their current one is too draining.
