What would you do if you found your elderly grandfather in this condition in a nursing home? |
went to check on my grandad today,he is completely helpless, can't talk, has to be fed.Found him at 12n lying in his bed in bowel movement and a large ring of yellow urine, his face was dirty,he hadn't been shaved, was congested in his chest. His hip had a large pressure area on it and apparently he hadn't been touched since breakfast.Still had his pajama top on..I went off.He was later admitted to the hospital with aspiration pneumonia. He is 83.What would you have done? How do you feel about nursing homes? Do you think these helpless patients are more likely to be neglected. I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather. It's very unfortunate that some nursing homes are either lacking in good help that they can't possibly take care of the patients that they have or else just don't have the compassion that it takes to care for the patients. I swear that my dear mother will never go into a nursing home because I've seen one too many homes in my life that treated the patients poorly. report it. Your State should have a section whom is committed to inspecting nursing facilities.Take a camera with you so you have documentation and report them.Start hunting for a suitable facility for your loved one. I have a parent in a nursing home and I work at a hospital as a technician. Unfortunately, the health care industry is understaffed due to budgeting constraints and individuals desiring that sort of employment. You need to speak with management and let them know that you will be watching for unacceptable treatment. The best lesson I've learned is that those who get regular visitors are better treated than the occupants who get no visitors. Visit your Grandad often and don't be afraid to speak up when you see a problem. Anything and everything you can do to them. |
