Should I get a second opinion on my gallbladder?

I went to my doctor for some pains I was feeling in my upper abdomen, right under my bra. My doctor did an ultrasound and the results came back just fine. Then I had a nuclear medicine scan and I guess this showed that my gallbladder was not functioning. Now I have an appointment to meet with a surgeon. Should I see someone else before I jump right into the surgery? I hear that gallbladder trouble is common with women my age (23) and most of the symptoms that I have read on the internet seem to agree that this is what my problem is.

had mine removed 2 yrs. ago when i was 56- i had had similar sporadic discomfort a few times before that didn't last long and i didn't know quite what it was
it happened basically after a large holiday meal and i thought i had just overeaten
had an ultrasound- found it to be grossly infected
the surgeon offered me 2 options
removal or wait it out to see if it flares up again
you sometimes can have long intervals without pain
But it will eventually come back
it was simple
general anesthesia
small incision in the umbilicus (belly button)
with a TINYplastic drain to outside the outside of my abdomen- that i didn't even feel
iv antibiotics for 48 hrs- pain for only an hour or 2 post surgery
(i needed only one injection for the pain immediately post surgery)
the doctor comes in and pulls out the drain after 2 days
just a little momentary pressure with a pop-no pain
then you go home
had mine done on tues. evening went home thurs. morning
just a tiny little scar across the inside of the umbilicus
and a tiny little dot that looks like a faded freckle where the drain was- cant even tell i Had it done unless you look with a magnifying glass
it is your choice to see another doctor but eventually it will have to be done and you never know where or when you will get a gallbladder attack again- oh and gallbladders can rupture - then you have a whole other problem

I had mine out at 23, also. It's no big deal. I had mine out in 1989 and I have a huge scar. Now they make 3 tiny little incisions and pretty much suck it out. Believe me....if it's not functioning, you need to get it out--it can make you so sick. The scan you had with the contrast---if that diagnosed it, that's it. It needs to come out. There aren't any better or other tests they can do.

Good luck--you'll feel so much better soon!

I suffered from pains in the same area that you did for about four years. I finally went to the emergency room one night when I actually thought I was having a heart attack and could not get my breath. I was 30 at the time. They gave me two shots of morphine and that did not relieve the pain. Finally they did a cat scan and found that I had gallstones. If I had let it go much longer it could have caused me to die. If you truly want a second opinion get it now.

If it will make you feel better, I would definitely get a second opinion. Once that gallbladder is gone, that's it. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Yes, get a second opinion. I had my gallbladder removed 10 years ago and have suffered ever since with my bowels. Food runs right through me. I'd research an alternative to surgery first. Try natural approach. Good Luck.

Yes it is pretty common. I do recommend a 2nd opinion. Surgery isn't something to just jump right into without investigating. Doctors, etc, make mistakes sometimes. I'm not saying that this one did, because your symptoms sound like gall bladder disease. However, getting another opinion will not hurt and will put your mind at ease. Good luck.
