Unexplained intermittent metallic taste?

I noticed a really strong taste of blood in my mouth while just sitting in the floor. It was strong enough that I went to the bathroom and started spitting to see if there was a cut in my mouth--but nothing there. It almost felt like it was running down the back of my throat.

I have had a stuffy nose for what seems like forever, but it hasn't been severe. I've noticed slightly bloody mucus from time to time when blowing my nose, but never a full-on nosebleed. I don't feel any urge to cough and I don't have a sore throat, so I don't know if this is a postnasal drip or not. I'm on an SSRI, but I've been on it for a while and it hasn't done this before.

The taste occurred a few more times within minutes of each other--brushing my teeth didn't seem to help. I felt a bit dizzy every time, but I have an anxiety disorder and tend to hyper-exaggerate when I feel something's amiss, so I have no idea if that's related. Any ideas?

Please see a medical professional. While what you describe may 'only be' allergic rhinosinusitis (that is challenging enough), it can also be the result of other, even more serious, conditions.

Side effects from your SSRI can be the cause of your symptoms. "Rhinitis" is a frequent side effect. "Epistaxis" (nosebleed) is an infrequent side effect. Share this with your doctor.

May I make a suggestion regarding your SSRIs. I highly recommend a book by Sherry Rogers, M.D. called "Depression Cured At Last". It will teach you the causes of depression and other mood disorders (how and why the body's biochemistry gets unbalanced) and how to correct things so you can regain your health. It is available at Amazon.com for $24.95 or through the publisher at 1-800-846-6687.

Best wishes and good luck!

You may have a sinus congestion/irritation or rhinitis. Discuss with your doctor.

Possibly your body reacting to silver fillings.

You really ought to see a doctor but maybe you just have the flu. When I've got the flu it always tastes like I'm sucking on pennies.

are you dieting? if your body is in ketosis you may get a metallic taste in your mouth. ketosis is caused by low intake of carbohydrates, ie sugars, starches etc. check you diet. this could be the cause
