What are non prescription drugs to fall into deep sleep? Serious question?

I am bipolar so during high periods I cannot sleep. Doctors keep giving me same drug that induse depression. Not much help from them. So may be there is something I can do, maybe there is over the counter drug for that. Or maybe natural substance.

I hate to disappoint you but if you are bipolar over the counter isn't going to work. I have sleeping problems and I'm not bipolar. No matter how tired I am or how long I have gone without sleep nothing I have tried otc works. Your condition is too serious to ignore or try to treat on your own. Don't give up trying other meds or other Dr's if you need to.

I use melatonin. You can buy it anywhere and it works great for me. Benadryl (or anything with diphenhydrenamine) is known to knock you out. Valarian root is also pretty good for relaxing.

Melatonin also can help with depression, so it sounds like a good fix for you.

I tended to have very erratic sleeping patterns between school, work, and fun.. so when i needed to fall asleep at a time i knew i wouldn't be sleepy, i took something called Simply Sleep, by tylenol. But anything that has its active ingredient, Diphenhydramine, will work. You should be able to buy it at any grocery store.. or walmart, where i get it,

maybe your doc can prescribe xanax, or valuim
but otc, try sominex :)

I agree with Bo on both Homeopathic remedies... I have heard that both work well. I personally use Simply Sleep when I NEED to get to sleep but I can see where that may cause a drug interaction for you. Believe it or not, Chamomile tea does kinda work as does exercise and reading before bed.Keeping your sleeping area cooler at night is also something to think about. I just saw a report on sleep and lowering body temp . Try any combo of these, really. Good luck to you and sweet dreams.

Not an uncommon problem. Many people have sleep disorders. In fact it is more common that most would have you believe. It is due to the fact that people think they need to sleep at a certain time and wake up at a certain time. We can't make our bodies shut down when they don't want to. The best thing anyone can do is establish a lifestyle that allows you to reduce your stress and have regular hours for work and play. You need to establish a time to eat, work and play, i.e. get out and exercise and free your mind. To many people bring their work home with them and drink or take drugs to relax. Not good and leads to sleep disorders.

Being that you are bipolar, you really need to keep yourself on a strict regimen and eventually you will feel better and sleep better. Find an exercise you enjoy and do it at least an hour a day or as much as you can tolerate. Eat simple whole foods, no cigarettes, no alcohol and definitely no drugs of any kind.

The only thing I would recommend to you before sleep is little bit of melatonin. This is nonprescription over-the-counter supplement and it is effective if taken 1/2 hour before sleep. It helps regulate the circadian rhythm necessary for restful sleep. There are no side effects as it is a natural substance that we lose as we age.
