Bone Marrow Transplants PLEASE HELP!?

I know someone that may have to have one due to having non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The type of transplant would be "Allogeneic" which means the bone marrow cells would come from a donor.
The doctor said there is a 33% that it WILL work; a 33% that it WILL NOT work and the remaining percentage is death from the procedure!?!? (which shocked me)
Do you know anyone who has had this done? If so, please tell me what the outcome was.

I am a nurse on a paediatric oncology/haematology ward.
we have only just started performing BMT's (Bone marrow transplants) on the ward and have taken a few children back from other wards after having theirs done. the children who do better from having BMT's are those who had a immunodeficiency. the ones who have had a BMT from having a leukaemia or lymphoma I have seen four children go through it and only one survive. I am not saying that it will not work for the person you know but those who have a lymphoma or leukaemia have a harder time going through the process. This is because often the doctors will want a graft versus leukaemic response, which in theory would mean that the donor cells would attack the leukaemic/lymphoma cells and put the cancer into remission. it does not always work or it can go too far where the donor cells will fight the person's 'good' cells and cause very bad GVHD (graft versus host disease) and compromise their whole body.
Below are some good websites to look at going through the whole BMT process.

Death. Don't do the procedure.

There are many bone marrow and stem cell transplants that are being done. It is risky . . but if there is a chance that it will work . . most cancer patients believe it is a chance worth taking for a 'cure'. Patients need to weigh what is most important to them . . usually though doctors will not recommend this treatment unless they think it will benefit the patient. Many patients are turned down for the procedure so . . it is not offered to everyone.

There are never any guarantees with any type of cancer treatment. There is no known cure for cancer . . just treatment options that might lead to an individual remission or 'cure'. Every single procedure is a risk.

It is a very risky proceedure bc of risk of infection. I just had one with cord blood and am on day 78. So far everything is going well except I have a touch of bronchitis.

Its worth the risk for your life
