Niacin Problem?

I stopped taking niacin because it started making my skin weird. I was takin 4 100 mg a night. THEN I noticed my skin started turning this ashy off-color, and wondered why. When I took it again, my skin turned back to its natural color?

Can anyone explain this to me? And what can I do where my body doesn't need to depend on niacin?

Niacin does all kinda crazy things to the blood flow which affects the skin. Most common is 'Niacin Flush' - Google that and you will see a bunch of stuff about it as well as probably some other detail about how Niacin affects your skin.

I used to take it and ended up with a big rash on my face for ages and prickly heat.

The recommended daily allowance of niacin is 2-12 mg a day for children, 14 mg a day for women, 16 mg a day for men, and 18 mg a day for pregnant or breast-feeding women. I hope you weren't taking that much, an overdose can cause blindness, birth defects, doses above 2g a day can cause liver failure. Just eat lots of oats, as this contains Niacin and you will not have to worry about the tablets.

The relationship between niacin and skin is discussed at the rash page of the source below.
