Niacin toxicity: how much is safe? |
Let's say that, hypothetically, you were planning to give your friend a large dose of vitamin B3 (niacin) as a practical joke. The goal here is to make said friend's skin flush, burn, and itch like the dickens for an hour. The goal is NOT to kill or permanently injure him鈥攖hat's not really the sort of thing you can laugh about later. Your friend is a healthy nineteen year old male, weighing in at about 150 pounds. Try another practical joke on your (hypothetical?) friend. Overdosing on vitamins or minerals can be quite dangerous and may even kill your (hypothetical?) friend. An example is some Arctic or Antarctic explorers, who ate their huskies liver to avoid starvation, killed themselves with Vitamin A poisoning. If you eat the liver of a polar bear or most dogs you will more than likely kill yourself with Vitamin A poisoning. An Internet search for niacin (OR "Vitamin B3") + overdose (OR toxic) should give you all the relevant information you are seeking. |
