Why is taking mega doses of vitamins not advisable when taking NIACIN to lower cholesterol?

i was told to use NIACIN instead of pravachol to save money as they both reduce cholesterol. i was cautioned not to take mega doses of vitamins. What is meant by mega doses? Is 400 I. U. of vitamin E or 500 mg of Vitamin C considered mega doses?

Because NIACIN is derived from Vitamin Bs... it's asking a lot from your liver... also overdosing on this type of vitamin is bad for your liver and can cause a huge amount of med issues like gout, diabetes type disorders, liver problems. I'd call the pharmacist to see about the vitamin E or C addition to the NIACIN.

Mega doses are much higher doses of Vit E & Vit C, neither of which have been found to be very toxic even at high doses.

If you are taking niacin, don't take the time-released type which can damage your liver. Niacin makes your blood vessels more permeable so that your body can eliminate toxins. Riboflavin and Vit B6 also help lower cholesterol. Iodine also helps to metabolize fats and thereby lower cholesterol, but you'll have to get kelp tablets or a multi-vitamin with iodine in it; iodine also keeps your thyroid working for higher energy.

Don't take Vit D, which can raise your cholesterol.

Megadoses - for Vit C might be 2-3,000 mg or more; Vit E over 2,000 mg. And give your body a rest from the niacin, say take it for 3 weeks, then take one week off. It is hard on the liver.

Good luck.
