Can you get neuropathy from cancer?

If you have neuropathy, can it have been caused by cancer?

It is not caused by cancer usually but chemo often causes it.

Well, I know of at least one study that showed how certain antibodies produced during cancer can destroy neurons. . .in paraneoplastic syndrome. Short answer- yes.

neuropathy is nerve damage does not come from cancer

Many people who have cancer, or cancer treatments, may develop peripheral neuropathy.

Peripheral neuropathy is not one specific disease, but can occur due to many different conditions that cause damage to the peripheral nerves. There are many causes of peripheral neuropathy, but this information looks specifically at peripheral neuropathy caused by cancer or treatments for cancer.

If only one nerve is affected by the neuropathy it is referred to as mononeuropathy, if several nerves are affected it is mononeuritis multiplex and if many nerves are affected on both sides of the body it is called polyneuropathy.

So it is not the case always and in some cases it is only a sideeffect. The Oncologist will decide about the treatment only if required

You can get it from chemo. One of my drugs was Vincristine, and it caused neuropathy. It went away shortly after I stopped chemo though.

Neuropathy is a general term that refers to someone's symptoms (whether it be pain, numbness, etc) that stems from some type of neuronal involvement or damage. Neuropathy can be caused by a lot of things, including different diseases (diabetes, infection) and drugs (chemotherapy). Cancer is a potential cause of neuropathy, including paraneoplastic syndrome such as another answerer describes, or simply involvement of nerves by the cancer itself.

Neuropathy is a difficult thing to treat and to diagnose, so you would have to speak to your treating physician to figure out exactly what is the cause in your case.

You can definitely get neuropathy from cancer treatments, i.e. chemo. I am on the Folfox regimen and am not allowed to touch anything cold and can't drink anything below room temperature. My fingers feel dead to the second joint, both feet are dead and right leg up to calf. This is neuropathy caused by chemo.

Yes, neuropathy can be caused by the kiling of the cells from treatments and/or medicines.

Stay Blessed!
