Neuropathy in feet from diabetes, taking Lyrica 3xday and Amitriptaline 1xday still hurting.?

Doctor has on the above for neuropathy, but in the process of adjusting lantus so sugars high in AM lower rest of day. Sharp stabbing pains in feet. Laying in bed getting out a few times a day, back, knees hurting from laying in bed for a month. Doctor really doesn't have any ideas on how to help relieve the pain and hoped someone out there had experinced this and found some ways to help relieve it. He is taking Hydrocodine 500 mg about every 5 hours and it doesn't seem to help much. He is 19 years old and is a type 1 diabetic and doesn't make any insulin. On lantus 33 units 1xday and 8 units Novalog with meals and a sliding scale for sugar readings along with 8 units at each meal and other times when testing and sugar is high.

Mother, (me) going crazy from not knowing athing to do to help him. Work 4 days a week and get up every morning and fix his breakfast, go to work, spend the evening cooking and getting everything ready for the next day for myself and him, exhausted. :0)

First of all when a person is diabetic, using tight control of blood sugars will help a lot with neuropathy pain. If blood sugar is out of control, even a little, it makes the neuropathy a lot worse.

My Neurologist has me taking Cymbalta 60mg once a day and Lyrica 50mg three times a day.
Cymbalta helps with stabbing pain.
Lyrica with burning.

Cymbalta and Lyrica work very well together for peiripheral neuropathy. In my experience, narcotic type drugs like hydrocodone don't help this condition very much at all and are a waste of money.

For out of control pain, I soak my feet in icy cold water for about 20 minutes. that really helps when my feet burn really bad. I also ice pack them. If you don't have ice packs, a bag of frozen veggies work nicely. Distrtactions will sometimes help as well. Not passive things like TV, but something that will keep my mind busy enough to ignore the pain. It doesn't always work, but is worth a try. For stabbing pain, I try to massage the spot where the pain is. Sometimes it is so bad I fall. For me Cymbalta has really helped here.

And even though it hurts, walking as much as I can even just up and down the block or around the house can help. (But it sometimes hurts like the dickens)

Neuropathy is a miserable condition, and my best wishes go to both you and your son. It is hard to live with chronic pain, and hard to care for someone who has this condition. Bless you both.

Why dont u have Visiting Nurses coming to help you? You can get that service thru ur Doctor and Insurance...another thing..have you thought about putting him in a Convalescent Home until his sugar is adjusted? Type 1 diabetes is bad...those sharp pains is nerve damage by the diabetes....You need HELP...Please call the visiting Nurses there in ur area...ask the doctors staff to give you the numbers...they have them

You should see if a compounding pharmacy could help. These pharmacies specialize in taking prescription drugs that and making them available in many forms... Example = changing a pill into a cream. Sometimes, applying a drug locally in cream form is more effective than in pill form. It is worth a shot. You could get a start at www.apothecure.com

I can relate,my son has type 1 diabetes, started at age 13.Diabetic neuropathy is a complication of uncontrolled diabetes.Has your doc suggested an insulin pump for better control of blood sugars. This is like coming out of the dark ages when they go on the pump. You need to start letting him take some responsibility for his medical condition. He is 19.He needs to get up and fix his breakfast, check his sugars, keep a daily log. Please don't become co dependent. It is easy to do.You are driving yourself in the ground and you won't be any help to him if you continue to kill yourself. You have got to let him take some responsibility.

My husband is a type 1 diabetic and I am type 2 ... they just put my husband on an injection called Byetta .... it has really brought his blood sugar down to where it should be (it was running close to 500). My Dr. put me on Cymbalta (I'm also bipolar) and it is suppose to help the pain from diabetes. I hope this helps a little! Best of luck!!

I suggest you to stop consuming the drugs, it will destroy your kidney.
eat many tomatoes
eat many cucumbers
eat much green vegetables
drink 1,5 litres water a day
do not consume any sugar
God always bless you. Amen.

He needs to get out of bed and get some excercise even if it is only walking some of the pain is from not excercising the muscles and staying active, I'am a type 2 diabetic and also have the same problem, being idle is the worse thing you can do, diabetes can destroy many organs of the body if it isn't under control, and inactivity is the worse thing. I have just been diagnosed with congestive heart failure, but I'm going to keep kicking as long as I can.

Try Cymbalta
