I need advice about diabetic neuropathy?

can anyone advise me about diabetic neuropathy it was diagnosed about two years ago and apart from being told i have it that is all i have heard i understand from the internet that there are three types and from the list of symptoms it sounds like i have all types with pains ranging from aches in arms back and legs to very extreme cramp like pains in arms and legs mainly which can hurt for days afterwards i also get diarhea, and suffer from light headedness both of which are listed as symptoms can anyone help with advice and tips on coping and pain relief i currently take pregablin and tramadol to no effect

Symptoms may include
numbness, tingling, or pain in the toes, feet, legs, hands, arms, and fingers
wasting of the muscles of the feet or hands
indigestion, nausea, or vomiting
diarrhea or constipation
dizziness or faintness due to a drop in postural blood pressure
problems with urination
erectile dysfunction (impotence) or vaginal dryness
weakness
In addition, the following symptoms are not due to neuropathy but nevertheless often accompany it:
weight loss
depression
Types of Diabetic Neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathies can be classified as peripheral, autonomic, proximal, and focal. Each affects different parts of the body in different ways.
Peripheral neuropathy causes either pain or loss of feeling in the toes, feet, legs, hands, and arms.
Autonomic neuropathy causes changes in digestion, bowel and bladder function, sexual response, and perspiration. It can also affect the nerves that serve the heart and control blood pressure. Autonomic neuropathy can also cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) unawareness, a condition in which people no longer experience the warning signs of hypoglycemia.
Proximal neuropathy causes pain in the thighs, hips, or buttocks and leads to weakness in the legs
Focal neuropathy results in the sudden weakness of one nerve, or a group of nerves, causing muscle weakness or pain. Any nerve in the body may be affected.
Neuropathy Affects Nerves Throughout the Body
Peripheral Neuropathy
toes
feet
legs
hands
arms

The pain and tingling in your feet and hands can be from diabetes, as well as the cramping in your legs. You need to go back to the doctor for a good physical and medication update. Ask about Lyrica. It helps the pain, but be aware, it can cause weight gain and make you feel goofy til your body adjusts to it.

A good compounding pharmacy may be able to help. They can compound creams that contain a number of ingredients that can help those with this condition. You need a prescription but sometimes traditional oral meds don't help.

My daughter has just been diagnosed with this as well, she's finding it very hard to function right now and she's only 21. Tramadol seems to be working well for her in terms of pain relief, she was initialy on Amytriptaline which was no good for her so she came of it. Do you know why you developed this condition? it often comes as a result of poorly controlled diabetes....In my case the poor control was due to a non functioning left kidney which went undiagnosed for 7 years, by the time the bas***ds got round to doing a scan the kidney was withered to the point of no return and it was removed last September...it was all too easy for them to blame the patient saying oh your not injecting properly, oh your eating the wrong foods..etc etc....now the blood sugars are in the normal range neuropathy has kicked in ....Nice...NOT
Seems to me lke you have to fight all the way in the NHS to have your needs taken seriously and to get the treatment you deserve, I've learned this the hard way...if the drugs you are taking are not working for you then I urge you to go back to your GP or diabetes clinic at your local hospital and ask them to try something else until you find something that works for you...I wish you well my friend x

Reading your symptoms I wonder if you are suffering from side effects of the medication as well as the neuropathy. The cramps and the pains sound like neuropathy but the diarrhoea and the lightheadedness sound like side effects from the medication.

I take Pregabalin (Lyrica) and the information leaflet lists lightheadedness as a common side effect. Tramadol can cause stomach upsets too.

I suggest you go back to your diabetes adviser and ask for a review of your medication. If it isn't working then it should be reviewed. Perhaps you should have nerve conduction tests to assess the extent of your neuropathy.

No amount of pain killers are going to work.It is essential to keep diabetes under tight control. Some peaple do benefit from high dose of vitamin Bcomplex.
