Anyone familar with Neurofibromatosis?

My husband's maternal side of the family has a history of Neurofibromatosis. It's a nervous system disease that causes tumors to form on nerves, sometimes causing deformaties, etc. His grandmother had it (his mom's mom) and two of her five children had it (an uncle and an aunt.) His mother did not have it. My husband and his siblings do not have it. Does anyone know if my baby is at risk? I'm 36.5 weeks pregnant and just found out about this & told my OB. He said he could refer me to a genetic counselor, but I figured it would be pointless at this stage of the game. Anyone know anything about NF? What are the odds that my baby could have it?

It is possible, neither one of my parents or my siblings, grandparents, aunts or uncles had it and I was born with it, we found out when I was 15. The only person we know of in my family that had it is a distant cousin's father on my moms side had it.

You can get the child tested after its born, but in some cases no one may not for sure, until puberty.

NF is autosomal dominant, meaning that the parent has to have the disease to pass it on. If your husband doesn't have NF, your baby won't inherit it from him.
However, not all cases of NF are inherited. Some cases rarely occur as a spontaneous new mutation, but you are asking about inheritance risk.

I have NF1 I am the only one in my family so I am considered the genetic mutation. I have a 50/50 chance of passing it on to my children I have one beautiful daughter who is NF free praise God for that! I never sought Genetic Counseling because I knew the risk and even if I knew that my daughter had it when I was pregnant it would not change anything I often wonder the reason for this is it so a women can terminate her pregnancy that would mean I would not be here. Though I have dealt with a lot I do not have a mild form though it is not severe either I am not so bad off that I cannot live a full life. It is a horrible disease but those of us with it are able to live full and happy lives. If you and your husband do not have it your risk is the same as the rest of the "normal" population with is about 1 in 3500. Good Luck to you and congratulations on your pregnancy!! God Bless!
