Can neurofibromatosis affect breastfeeding? |
I have it, and I've had problems with low milk supply, breast becoming hard and lumpy, and pain during breastfeeding. I noticed that I have lots of little fibromas on one nipple, and that's the one that hurts during nursing. That's also the one that has less milk, and gets swolen and lumpy very easily. It sounds like your NF is causing some problems for you, mainly discomfort while breastfeeding. What remains to be seen is if the NF is causing your low breast milk production. If the nerve impulses are disrupted in such as away to inhibit the feedback mechanism that stimulates breast milk production, that could be a problem. Normally tactile stimulation of the breast causes an increase in the hormone prolactin that in turn increases milk production ("pro" - more "lactin" - milk). You may wish to bring this up with your primary care physician the next time you see him or her, but I imagine that not much can be done. |
