Is neurofibromatosis considered a disability?

It is a medical condition...but is it a disability??

I am filling out an application, but I am not sure if this counts as a disability. Also, this disease really bothers me. I often feel depressed about it. If you have this also, I would be glad to hear a short story about how you have coped with it.

Thank you?

My brother n law has this disease and he has low self esteem.I dont know how severe yours is.His has not gotten on the nerves. It is just on the skin. He gets a disability check, but he has some mental issues to.I guess from going thru childhood with the spots he has.The way you look does not determine who you are.He is 29 and hasnt gotten married because he does not want his kids to get the same thing. We love him and even if he had a child we would love it no matter what.

My son who is 28 months old and I have NF. I found out when I was 22 that I had this gentic diease. I have not tried to get disability for it. I do not have a porblem with having it. I do have tumors on my nerves as well as one on my right optic nerve. Report It

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that causes non-cancerous (benign) tumors to develop on nerves in the eyes, ears, brain, spinal cord and extremities of the body. It occurs in both genders and all racial or ethnic groups. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), approximately 100,000 people in the United States have one of the types of neurofibromatosis. The March of Dimes estimates that it is one of the most common genetic disorders. Questions for your doctor on neurofibromatosis

My child has some strange brownish spots on his or her skin. Is this a sign of neurofibromatosis?

I'm definately sure that it would be. I mean, if the condition is severe enough that it gets in the way of a person's activites of daily living (and that can be pretty severe.) I have heard of less serious conditions being labled as a disablilty. The best thing you can do is ask your doctor.

No, I am almost 100 sure it is not a disability, just a recognized medical condition..

I know I have Lupus with a mengionoma on the brain, secondary fibromyalgia w/raynauds syndrome as a secondary diagnosis and so far it is still just being viewed as a chronic medical condition..

strange , I know..especially when people can claim "disabled" with things like manic depression, alcoholism, and other easily maintained issues if they accept proper treatment and want to heal themselves.. ( the wonderfull people out there who have spent their time learning how to "play" and "work" the system, instead of working and getting therapy to heal )

Unfortunately, we can not heal ourselves..but get no special treatment or favors from society..

Lets hope things change and the the ones who need a little help sometimes get recognized, and the ones who can be "cured" or have their condition controlled are made to help themselves..

I know I'm rambling on, but I think you understand what I'm getting at..

Until then, we will continue to work full time to support those who should be out there helping us when we get sick and need some time to recuperate..
