Severe shooting, pulling neck pain following injury?

This is a shot in the dark, but...
I took my girls swimming last week, we were sitting on a seat-ledge in the pool, I pushed up and off to play tag with one of my kids and HURT the bottom of my neck/top of my back or spine against the lip along the edge of the pool itself. Had bad headaches for a few days, okay, that's what I get for jumping like that....last night while turning over in bed I felt a terrible, wrenching, stabbing, pulling, IMMOBILIZING pain in my neck. Today I can hardly move my neck, and any movement at all, like walking, sitting down, even sitting here typing is difficult because it is very hard to hold my head and neck still enough to avoid pain. Definitely going to see the dr. tomorrow--that is, unless someone can tell me they have experienced this b4 and maybe just need rest? Have taken 6 ibuprofen since 2:00 a.m., had a xanax to get to sleep (couldn't because of pain), and a prednisone I happened to have left from a regular regime of meds I take.

Most likely, you're ok. The spine can take a lot of beating unless you twist it at an unnatural angle.

Try the following: try to stand straight, then pat the top of your head firmly. If there is no additional pain when you pat your head, your spine's ok. Then the injury is in the ligaments and muscles around the spine, which will heal well.

If you do feel additional pain, I'm sorry -- you've a serious spine injury and probably shouldn't be moving at all.

Even if someone tell's you they've experianced this before- GO TO THE DOCTOR! Imobilizing pain is never something that should just be brushed off.
I injured my neck once when i was in high school. I was participating in the high jump at a track meet and landed wrong. I couldn't keep my head straight for nearly a week. It turned out to only be a strained muscle, but I had to be in a neck brace until it healed.
