Does anyone know how to get rid of neck and shoulder tension?

I have neck and shoulder tension real bad. Its there 24hrs a day and gets really bad when i start to get stressed or upset or anxious. I actually begin to twitch uncontrolobly shrugging my shoulder. I have a anxiety disorder. Any suggestions on how i can get rid of it. I used to take valiums, it works but i dont want to be a space case.

in November I started going to a clinical massage therapist for the same thing, I did 4 sessions, one every week and he also gave me exercises, now I go about once every 3 weeks, I feel much better and continue to do the exercise which take up a whole 10 mins of my day

My doctor gave me exercises to do with my neck and shoulders.

Hi there. You named your own diagnoses....stress. I just told someone else that stress can kill you.....and it can. An emotional problem like stress is a real problem, not just in you "head", and it causes real physical problems, even cancers.

It needs cured, like any illness. In your case your stress is causing real pain in your neck and shoulder.

Make sure you sleep on a firm mattress and with a nice supportive pillow that does not hold your head at an unnatural angle while you sleep.

You need to address your problems and solve the problems and the stress will disappear. It's when we chose to just "chew" on our problems without making decisions and resolutions to them that our physical body begins to suffer. We oftentimes "blow up" over the smallest infraction in our lives because we cannot control everything that happens around us or even to us, and some of us are controllers.

There is no "cure" for your physical problem as long as you continue to choose to stress out over your life rather than make decisions and stick to them for the betterment of your own health.

Heating pads, relaxation techniques (yoga, etc,,,,,,the bookstores are full of muscle relaxing techniques) will help. But these are only temporary and you'll be asking the same question in less than a week.

You have Anxiety disorder. This is nothing more than a medical term given to somebody who choses again not to work on their life and the doctors pacify them with a diagnoses and oftentimes a pill "to relax" them. Valium is addicting as is all other Rx drugs as well as alcohol, street drugs, etc. They "make you forget your reality for a short time". Then it wears out and WALLA! Life is still there, problems and all!!!

Even if you merely get "stressed" over a test, over an interview, over a deadline at work, over the kids tearing up the house, over the car breaking down, over dozens of things that can happen to all of us all of the time.....little individual things. Ask yourself...."what is the WORST possible thing that can happen if it isn't resolved immediately or not at all", and how much control over the situation do I REALLY have?; then with what's left, write out steps to a resolution and follow them come hell or high water!

However old you are, get a grip before you send yourself to your grave. Grow up, even if you are 60! Solve your issues and move on. Life is short, you can worry yourself to death. Ask me.......I know.
Been there, done that. I'm a psyc nurse as well and there's no "nice" way to tell somebody to "get a life". Doctors won't do it because they want you to pay them. You don't owe me a cent and I've got nothing to gain from lying to you. My education is spoken here.

Good luck.....pray for God to give you strength for you to do what you need to to, and God bless.

I am an RN

The chiropractor I go to taught me a great exercise to stretch your neck and shoulder muscles. Let your head drop down till your chin touches your chest. Link your hands together and place them on the back of your head. Pull your elbows as close together as possible. Let the weight from your arms stretch your neck and shoulder muscles- don't pull down with your arms. Try to hold this position for a couple of minutes and repeat the exercise whenever you can. I found it really helpful. There are also some natural muscle rub oils you can buy from health stores. Ones with lavender and arnica are good. Hope this helps!
