Question about Virtigo? |
My boyfriend has been complaining of the back of his neck aching- and he has been having heavy dizzy spells and isn't able to lay his head down to relax. When he first noticed this, his entire body was shaking and his heart was beating rapidly. I took him to the emergency room (Meningitis is on the rise where I am and have heard stories of it's rapid virus and sudden deaths in several cases) and we got a lot of tests done and everything seems okay. The doctor told him he has an inner ear infection of some sort but he never complained about his ears- just the back of his neck. Could this be peripheral vestibular disorder? If anyone out there knows about this, please inform me! Thanks so much! It does sounds like an inner ear infection. I have had many of these and it sounds like what you are describing. There is no pain associated with it, just the light headed feeling you are describing. I had to go to a doctor to get my inner ear crystals realigned...sounds weird but it really did help. I would probably recommend a second opinion if you really feel the doctor mis-diagnosed. The part of your body that discerns orientation is in your ears, that is why even if he doesn't have ear pain, if those parts are effected, your eyes will try to correct themselves prematurely, hence you get dizzy. It sucks I know .. Inner ear infection is probably what is causing the dizzy spells. He may have a flu or cold on top of it which would explain his other symptoms. The best thing you could do would be to call and make an appointment at an ENT office. Find an office that deals with vertigo. Most ENT offices will have some sort of treatment, usually exercises that can be done to help diminish the effects of dizziness. However, if you want to make sure that there isn't something else going on you may want to schedule either a VNG or an ENG to test what else could be causing the dizziness. Vertigo causes these symptoms, not necessarily all of them though,Severe headache, dizziness,Not able to lay your head down because the room seems to spin,Nausea, sometimes I feel weak. There is a small bone in the ear that moves or something and causes vertigo. It could be, which actually is an inner ear thing too. There are a couple of schools of thought on treatment. One suggest therapy that actually brings on the vertigo, and breaks up the problem causing crystals. The other say that it is not good to induce vertigo. Ive done the exercises at home, they are fairly simple and it helped me. Whenever I felt vertigo coming on, I'd do them, induce it until it settled and then was vertigo free for the time being. There are different extents of vertigo so I do not suggest doing anything without consulting a doctor. It has also been my experience that days after drinking the vertigo is worse. I have no idea if there is any research to back that up, just a personal observation. If you'd like I could email what the exercises consist of. My son has been dealing with this for months, after seeing a ear, nose, throat, neurologist, and having a normal Cat Scan, and other finding, he was diagnoised with having migraines without the pain, they put him on a channel blocker and is feeling himself again, I am not a doctor, a nurse and not diagnoising you, but just alittle history on my son, good luck!! PS: He gets massage also that help alot. |
