How can I stop from picking at my skin? Help! My bf is going to leave me 'cause of this obsession!?

I'll get the tiniest little blemish and turn it into a ugly sore. This habit has also made me more prone to serious infections. I've had MRSA probably a dozen times. Part of the reason why I do it is that it makes me feel better kinda like cutting. I also see things that most people wouldn't even notice unless they looked closely at me under a magnifying mirror. My Dr. told me that it is partially due to BDD (Body dysmorphic disorder) and OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). I'll spend sometimes hours a day picking. I'll even use scissors, razors, and tweezers to pick. It's sucks because I know that I was really good looking but this scarring is making me not so attractive! My bf has threatened to leave me. I'm taking Prozac which isn't helping. I'm also afraid that I'll cut a major artery or nerve in my neck or on my face which is where I usually pick. Are there procedures that can get rid of these deep pit scars once I get this under control??? How do I stop? HELP!

this sounds like OCD to me. I would suggest talking to your doctor about this or seeing a psychiatrist. there are medications that can help you control your actions and change your life for the better. good luck,

You need some serious help kiddo....

first no ofense that is discusting and use cortozone every night a special cream or just try any cream or tea tree oil and ur skin may be sensative to ur body wash

Probrably an OCD thing. Here are how you stop compulsions:
1. Think about why you do it
2. Think about what you do
3. And distract yourself and stop yourself from doing it, resist the urge even if you feel anxious without doing it.

Good luck.

OMG you sound like I do. I even use sewing needles and like you it's just a tiny little thing and I turn it into a mountain. Infact I've been asked if I use Meth cause of what I do to my face, I was just doing it before I got to my computer. My husband is always riding my *** and yelling at me for it, I usually don't even realize I'm doing it until he yells... I don't know if that would still fall under my other self harm behaviours though, I cut, pull hair, OD, etc... never thought much about my face as a self harm stratigy. My face just looks screwed up naturally anyways, nothing is porportioned right, and it's all just wrong, I guess I pick cause I can't do any worse.. can't get help for it anyways,. Good Luck and get some help.

have you tried paxel? I know ocd is hard. It's too too hard. I just keep trying and changing pills to find the right one. but even that's not enough. some anxiety pills could calm you down too. most off all you have to try too stop with all you got too. and your boyfriend should support you though this.

yours sounds like a very serious case. when you are at leisure you need to tie your hands or wear gloves that you can't take off. your not getting the best of psychiatric behavoir care. get on stronger meds also. eliminate stress and maybe what you need to do also is have a full active schedule so you have little time for this obsession. go to bed earlier, wake up later. you need the right help.

if the meds aren't helping you should talk to your doctor about possible switching. if it helps try wearing gloves around the house. as for the scarring, you can try laser treatments, but nothing will get rid of them completely.
