I have severe nearsightedness and I know the primary cause is because my eyeball is too long...?

So my question is why is it that my eyeball is long?
does it grow that way because the eyeball adapts to seeing
things up close...?
was I born that way?
is it due to genetics?
or does is grow that way because of some lack of nutrition?
why is it that my eyeball has grown long?
