How do you go offperscription drugs/narcotics for pain management going off?

I am on too very heavy narcotics and would like to think about going off these Ms contin 30 mg and Static 5mg. I have been taking this for 5 years for chronic back pain. I am also on topmax 3oo mg a day. I am thinking I would like to go off that too. But one step at a time.

I would not attempt to do it without the supervision of a doctor.

No its going on...

If you want to get off narcotics after taking them for such a long time, you need to consult with your physician. It will take a long time and a lot of dosage adjustments. Do not do this on your own, you need to be monitored, the withdrawal from narcotics can be fatal if not done correctly.

Have you thought of yoga to help you with your spine? Spinal conditioning plays a major role in your overall health as you know all too well and yoga is great for keeping your spine healthy.

Frist talk to your doctor about even doing so you may find it is not a good idea . but if you want ottry it you need to taper off them very slowly at lower dose over time . you can suffer from withdrawl it is unpleasnt at oworst and can in some case casiue serious effects .
I suggest frsit asking why you wantot be off themeds over 5 years yoiu shouldbe used to them and not have many sideeffects .
if it is because of pressure form a family member or friend please think about thier motives .
Being "drug free" is not always a good thing . you may find that your pain is worse and need to stat back ona opaite therapy of some sort .

Ther is alot of misinformationabout opaits please seek out real information is that they are extreamly addictive abddeqdly they are not.
I am a pain paitent and would not think of going of my meds . I stopped buying into the anti drug gibberish once I relized I was being helpd by thease meds and that Infact I was living again not acting like a addict ! dependanace and addiction are two very different things .
Talk to yopur doctor about that also .

Addcition is a set of maladpetive behaviors depandace simply means your body has become used to having the med in it and is now "dependant " on ity tolrance is a abetter word actually . Becareful regardless of what you do .

it will be very hard to do with out your dr's supervision.

I also take 30 mg ms contin. I take then twice daily for chronic pain. My suggestion is to maybe taper down to a less potent narcotic. This would prevent any major withdrawel symptoms and would also help control whatever pain the ms contin was prescribed for. Maybe try a drug with either hydrocodone or oxycodone. These are both very effective opiate pain killers but are not nearly as strong as the ms contin, I also would continue on the non-narcotic drugs as they will probably help with keeping you out of pain. However if you are dead set on not taking anything, you need to figure out a way with your doctor to wean you off the narcotics. If you go off of them ''cold turkey'', you will have horrible withdrawel symptoms. Also you would need to talk to your doc about managing your pain in a non-medication way, like phyisical therapy or massage. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide.

Slowly and under the supervision of a Dr.
A Dr can do drug toxicity blood tests and watch for narcotic levels.
To go off of narcotics abruptly can cause seizures.
Methadone is a good tool for detoxing.
Granted Methadone is also addictive but getting off of Methadone is easier than other addictive drugs.
Your Dr will know which medicine to take you off of first and will know how to ease you off.
Here again I do agree that sometimes it is necessary to take certain medicines for certain circumstances and it may not be possible for you to get completely off of some of your meds.
There is too the possibllity that the "Drug Seeking Monkey" is there and making your pain seem worse when in reality it is trying to get you to get more and real pain is not there.
Your Dr will know what to do and don't be concerned if they ask you to go to the hospital for detox as they will have the personnel available if you start having withdrawals that need supervision. They will have the neccessary medicines to treat the withdrawals and to control possible seizure activity.
