Narcotics for treating chronic back pain and side effects?

Does anybody else out there use large doses of narcotic analgesia for chronic back pain and if so does it give the required relief? Very interested in side effects of drugs like fentanyl (Durogesic) patches, oxycodone and the likes. I am on fairly large doses of these meds and I never seem to feel "well". I think some of my back pain may actually be kidney pain as a side effect of the pain relief. Also the whites of my eyes have yellow lines through them. Would this indicate liver problems? I am too scared to raise these issues with my GP at the moment in case he decides to stop the medication which would make my life a living hell pain wise. Please if you have had similar experience or have real advice for me, please answer asap! I am starting to feel really, really unwell all over.

I am a Pain Management Patient myself for Chronich back pain. I have been on massive amounds of Oxycontin and Fentnyl patches. There are alot of different side effects. To start off You need to have your Liver funtions tested !! The longer you are on the high dose meds the more damage it does to your body. I had to Detox off the Oxycontin myself. I was on 240mg in the morning and 180mg at night and then was perscribed Oxycodone 5mg for breakthrough pain. and when I was on the pain patches I was on 175mcg. It really did affect my body in ways that I didnt realize till I was off the meds. Even with all that medication I still was not out of pain. Now I am on Methadone 10mg and 5mg. and take Lortab 10mg for break through pain. I am also in the process of getting into a new pain specialist. My Primary DR Lost his lisence for Narcotic meds violations. I am still in severe pain. Your GP can not just take you off the meds because your body is medically addicted. He would needs to reduce it slowly. Are you going to just your GP for your pain control or are you going to a Pain Specialist? I would really like to talk with you through e-mail. I have alot more info then I can put down here. My e-mail is danainca39@yahoo.com.

First off never, never stop the pain meds without consulting a doc. Second, it depends on what you are calling large doses. What maybe large to you may in reality be a normal dose?? Yes, all pain meds can cause a toxicity to your body... too much over long periods of time and your body has to make adjustments for them. Most clinics can do a liver function test to see if you are having any problems... if you are not doing these test then see a doc and get him/her to order one. There should not be a problem from your doc on the test, he should understand. Some medications are removed from the body thru the liver and some are removed thru the kidneys and some are both. If you have been on them (pain pills) for an extended period you might ask to be changed to a new or different one so your body does not become use to them. My wife was on some strong pills for over a year and she said that they felt like they weren't working anymore, so we had her doc change her to something lighter and they seem to help her some... at least for now. You need to discuss your concerns with your doctor and he/she can make some suggestions for you.
