What is difference between hypnotics & narcotics in prescription medications?

Hypnotics are used to induce sleep to treat insomnia. Examples are zolpidem (Ambien) and eszopiclone (Lunesta). Most hypnotics are mildly addictive and are classified as Schedule IV controlled substances by the DEA.

Narcotics are opiates and opiate derivatives used to treat pain. Many of them will make you feel sleepy, but this is a side effect; they are never prescribed to directly induce sleep. Examples of narcotics are hydrocodone (Vicodin, et. al), oxycodone (OxyContin), and hydromorphone (Dilaudid). Narcotics can be extremely addictive and are classified in Schedules I, II, and III by the DEA.

I love the first answer. But from a treatment, EMT, perspective the signs, symptoms, and treatment are VERY similar. They apear to be the same when you look at a person that has taken either one.
