Question about Narcolepsy?

I was woundering if this could be Narcolepsy.
My bf will sleep from six am to usualy seven pm.. He says he cant control how long he sleeps. His alarm will go off but he will either turn it off or just not even hear it . When he comes over, he will usualy go right to sleep until he hast to work. If i wake him up and ask him a question, when he actualy gets up, he wont remember me even waking him up. He says it really frustrates him and he tryst to stay awake but just cant... Is this narcolepsy.. or idk what it could be.. but im kinda getting frustrating that he can sleep for 9 hours, than comes over and goes straight back to sleep for hours! Idk if he realy cant stay awake.. but i beleave him when he says he cant. Any sugestions?

hard to say. i slept for 22 hrs straight once, and could easily sleep thru alarms on any given day. but there are other symptoms that generally go along with narcolepsy: sleep attacks (usually lasting several minutes long and happening during any point of the day), cataplexies (loss of muscle tone associated with emotional triggers, like getting angry or extreme laughter - it sometimes looks like a faint), hallucinations when falling asleep or waking up, sleep paralysis (again when falling asleep or waking up).

i'd suggest he see his dr for a physical and maybe a sleep study. even if it's not narcolepsy, he may act this way out of something else that is affecting the quality of his sleep. just because he's sleeping alot doesn't mean it's a GOOD quality sleep - and that's just as important as how much sleep someone gets.

From what experience I have with Narc. I don't believe that is it. My friend had it and he would fall asleep sitting up, driving, and in the middle of conversation. He didn't get tired and have to lay down, he'd literally just fall asleep in mid-sentence and wake up again randomly anywhere from 1min-hours later. He was in and out of sleep and it became dangerous for him. He didn't develope symptoms till we were in high-school.

Doesn't sound like narcolepsy. It is a condition where a person falls asleep while doing activities. Sometime they only doze and others may actually lose muscle tone and collapse. These are usually short term episodes. It sounds like your boyfriend needs to see a doctor because he may have an underlying health condition physically or may have a depression problem.

There could be a physical reason why he is so tired (anemia?) or a psychological reason (depression?) so I woud suggest he see a doctor if it is intefering with normal daily activities.
