Will permanent marker do anything to the keratin in nails besides make it a different color?

I was wondering because I think my teacher said something about ink poisoning or something. I don't honestly believe it will do anything, but I'd rather be safe and have normal colored nails than diseased with colored ones.

Why not just use black nail polish?
I doubt you'll get poisoned, but it will stain your nails, so if you've got somewhere nice to go you'll be screwed!
