Leptospiroses?

10 months ago I got really ill and couldn't get out of bed for a couple months and still had sever pain, head aches, body aches for over 9 months..... I have no medical insurance and work for myself so i was reluctant to visit a physician but eventually went to 3 different doctors trying to seek a cure.... was on all different types of antibiotics...none of the doctors gave me a blood test cause they kept guessing i had this or that..... i'm feeling much better today and a friend mentioned that maybe i had leptospiroses since i'm always barefoot inside and out and there are a lot of rats that run around in the yard at night .
i'm thinking maybe he hit the nail on the head.

Do you know about this disease ?
What do you think ?

"Transmission from animals to humans is usually indirect. Animal urination in soil or water is a frequent mode of transmission. Swimming or other recreational activities in contact with contaminated water is another source.
"The microorganism multiplies in the blood and can infect other areas of the body such as the liver, kidney, lung and meniges (nerves). The incubation period is 8 - 12 days followed by chills, fever, headache and severe muscular pain. The most serious (infection) is often characterized by jaundice (yellow color of skin) and hemorrhage in the subcutaneous tissue (bruising or scatters of red dots).
"Since there is no vaccine, prevention is achieved by avoiding contact.
"Diagnoses is made through blood tests.
"In the early stages of infection, doses of penicillin, streptomycin or tetracycline is effective. Once the disease has progressed past the fever stage, antibiotics are usually ineffictive.

Leptospirosis is caused by exposure to the bacteria, which can be found in fresh water contaminated by animal urine. It occurs in warmer climates.

Risk factors include:

Occupational exposure -- farmers, ranchers, abattoir workers, trappers, veterinarians, loggers, sewer workers, rice field workers, and military personnel.
Recreational activities -- fresh water swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and trail biking in warm areas.
Household exposure -- pet dogs, domesticated live stock, rainwater catchment systems, and infestation by infected rodents.
The incidence of leptospirosis is low in the continental U.S. Hawaii has the highest number of cases in the U.S.

Symptoms
Incubation period of 2 - 26 days (average 10 days)
Abrupt onset of fever, rigors, myalgias, and headache in 75 - 100% of patients
Dry cough (25 - 35% of cases)
Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea (50% of cases)
Less common symptoms include joint aches, bone pain, sore throat, and abdominal pain
Conjunctivitis
Approximately 7 - 40% of patients may have muscle tenderness, an enlarged spleen or liver, enlarged lymph glands, sore throat, muscle rigidity, abnormal lung sounds, or skin rash

Diagnosis is most frequently done by testing the blood for antibodies to the bacteria.

Other tests may be done:
A white blood cell count generally shows less than 10,000 white blood cells.
Urinalysis is usually abnormal.
Higher-than-normal creatine kinase is found in approximately 50% of patients.
About 40% of patients have a slight to moderate increase in liver enzymes.

Treatment
Penicillins, tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, and erythromycin can be given to treat leptospirosis. Supportive care needs to be given in complicated cases.
