Can mold exposure lead to accute myositis?

wife has swelling near underarm, a feeling like something crawning under skin under her arm and in-between her shoulder blades. she has recently been recovering from bronchitis that was treated with a z-pak,decongestants and cough med. M.D. told her today that she had bursitis, gave her a shot i think and 600mg ibupro and cyclobenzoprene scripts. but he had put accute myositis as best i can make out on the diagnosis. there may be some mold in the appartment that we just moved to in august. just wanting more info!!

Hi Mike. I just did a quick review of the medical literature on Medline. There are case reports of patients developing pneumonitis (lung inflammation/infection) from exposure to molds and fungi. The initial symptoms would likely 'mimic' the meaningless diagnosis so commonly used for any cough/irritation of the bronchi known as 'bronchitis'.

Is your wife still having lung symptoms? Was a sputum culture performed? A chest X-ray? These tests should have been done BEFORE treatment based on 'guess work'.

Mold should always be avoided in your living/work spaces. Mycotoxins (mold toxins) can cause virtually any symptom, so mold needs to be considered as a possibility for at least some of your wife's problems.

I agree with one of the other answerers that the drugs your wife was given can potentially cause muscle pain/inflammation (myositis).

I will be brutally honest here on two issues.
1) I can not say with any confidence that your wife's symptoms are related to molds or the drugs prescribed, and 2) Your doctor is grossly incompetent - find a new one. A diagnosis of 'bursitis' is B.S. and a strong sign this doctor is not competent to diagnose your wife's problems. An honest, competent doctor would tell you that he/she doesn't know what is going on and NOT B.S. you with a B.S. diagnosis of 'bursitis'.

Best wishes and good luck.

Probably NOT going to be caused by the mold. Check this web site for good info. Pay close attention to the "See full list of 20 causes of Myositis" it talks about drug related causes. Best Wishes

Bursitis between the should blades? Thats a new one.

Maybe she should have asked what the dx was.
