Types of Myopia?

I need to know about degenerative myopia. I know there are three types of myopia: normal, hereditary, and degenerative. Normal myopia is if your vision gets worse from watching too much TV and stuff, right? Hereditary is just like normal myopia, except your if runs in the family, so you have a higher chance of myopia. But what about degenerative? I read that even when you're past adulthood, your vision will keep getting worse, and it can't be helped. How can I tell if I have degenerative myopia of not? Both my parents wear glasses, and I started wearing them in kindergarten (I wear contacts now). Could someone help me?

wiwkipedia explains it fairly well. Go there and read, I am not going to compy and paste it....GOod luck! O^O

watchin too much tv DOES NOT make your eyes worse!! the kind u have will most likely get worse on their oun with no way to stop it

Degenerative (or Pathological) Myopia occurs mainly in persons of Chinese or Jewish ancestry, and happens when the eye length grows substantially beyond the normal (average) eye length. The growth is caused by the individuals genetics, and is not (or is minimally) influenced by his activities. There is no current treatment to stop degenerative myopia, but people who have it should have regular (yearly or biyearly) eye exams as retinal damage can frequently occur and cause vision to worsen if treatment is not undertaken.

People with myopia greater than 6 diopters (-6D prescription) MAY have degenerative myopia, BUT, some people may have 'normal' myopia with a prescription as high as -12D. Only your eye doctor can tell you if you have this eye disease.

A person with degenerative myopia will usually not have 20/20 vision, even with the best glasses or contact lenses. Their prescription will continue to get higher into adulthood, whereas normal myopia will mostly stabilize after puberty.

If both of your parents are myopic, and you started showing myopia at a young age, your myopia is likely genetic (but not likely degenerative). However, that doesn't mean that you can't influence how your eyes change and grow. The amount of close work that we do (reading, computer work, handheld gaming, etc) can also influence myopia. Here are a couple of tips to minimize your eyestrain, and minimize the controllable aspect of your myopia:

1. For every 20 minutes of close work that you do, take a 5 minute break and look at something far away.
2. Don't work too close. Your eyes should never be closer to your work than the length of your forearm.
3. Your computer should be arms-length away and the screen slightly below your line of sight.
4. When reading from a book for a long period of time, angle it 30 degrees up towards you.
