Myopia.org OPINIONS!?

Hey I just spent the last 3 hours reading a website that has really changed my life and now im feeling pretty depressed

its called www.myopia.org , ive been wearing glasses all my life and now I realize that all this time ive been quite literally destroying my vision.... I wish I would have known about this when I was a kid, It depresses me to read some of the people that have saved their eyesight knowing that I killed mine just by following what the optometrist said....

Please comment if you have fully read the website, and if you are an optometrist please tell the truth if you knew about the dangerous side effects of glasses... you can even change your name if you want so your associates wont know.

I just want to know how many optometrists/ophthalmologists/opticians knew the truth about this

thanks, I feel really bad right now about what I did to my eyes :(

I rarely get upset about things and im usually a very happy person... but this has really gotten to me... I am in a state of shock and panic.... seriously

I'm sorry you wasted three hours reading that site...its completely wrong. People seem to love a conspiracy.

When an optometrist prescribes eye glasses it does not force the ciliary muscle to stay locked up. Instead they ensure those muscles are relaxed...often in young children they will put drops in the eye to make sure there is no possible way those muscles are contracted.

Secondly, the site also claims that reading glasses will prevent myopia from occuring. Research has shown that prescribing a near addition in a fast progressing child will only slow down progression if the child has an esophoria (tendancy for the eye to turn in) and if the child is orthophoric (eyes have tendancy to point foward) or exophoric (point out....most myopes have this) no change in progression was noted.

It should be added that in esophoric children myopia was not reversed but slowed (by about -0.25 per year compared to the other groups). Often progressive lenses are prescribed to children due to this.

You can sleep sound knowing that your eyes haven't been destroyed by your glasses :)

NO that site is NOT true! The need for eye glasses is a function of how long or short your eyeball is. If you have myopia or are nearsighted then you have a longer than average eye.....if you are farsighted or have hyperopia then you have shorter than average eyeball. I know this becuase I measure people's eyeballs. You can not control how tall you are....and you can not control how bad your eyes get since it is ultimatley a function of growth. Please do not be upset.

With this said, this is a THOERY that when a CHILD first gets glasses that it can be a good idea to not prescribe the full Rx as to make the eyes "work" harder....again this is a theory...one that I personally do not believe and really I dont know of any doctors that do.....

Just as a side note...1 mm is 3 diopters of glasses....

I read that same website a few months ago and was also pretty shocked, although many eye care professionals don't believe it, it seems to make A LOT of sense. In the end I really don't know, i wear my glasses when I need to and take them off when I dont... its sort of annoying because I have to readapt every time I wear them but its just something you get use to... I feel way more comfortable without them.

Eyetek67 the website believes that yes an elongated eye is what myopia is however it tries to explain that nearwork and moreso using minus lenses, esspecially for close work, causes alot of strain on the eye and forces it to elongate which is why people's prescriptions get so high sometimes.

its like a cycle, you develop myopia than get glasses, you wear to glasses while doing close work and cause stress on your eyes, your eye elongate to compensate however then your distance vision is worse... you get a higher prescription and the cycle starts anew.

Now more evidence than ever, even by mainstream optometrists say that environmental factors such as nearwork cause myopia. Just look around you, many college/university students wear glasses but how many thugs do you see in a back alley wearing glasses... I know these examples are extreme but its always been that more educated people tend to wear glasses!

yep. total CRAP.
