Myopia & Blindness?

I've had myopia ever since I was 6, my whole family has it which leads me to believe its genetics. During my teenage years my diopters jumped from -1.00 to -8.00, its only now steadied and stopped at -9.00 to -9.50 after I passed the age of 18. My parent's have always told me that myopia will lead to blindness if I don't strictly follow optician's suggestions to lowering it. I never believed them, and even now I don't think blindness is a big probability. But I've always been very worried that it might be true and I might be at risk. So I wanna hear some professional opinions. How likely am I to go blind either now or later as I age? I wear contacts almost daily now if that matters. I have no flashes, and very very occassionally do I see black spots flashing briefly at the very margins of my eyes, like twice or so in a year. Besides that there really is no noticeable damages to my eyes. So, opinions please.

Myopia will not lead to blindness. That's ridiculous. I'm 49 years old and have been myopic my entire life. I get my eyes re-examined every two years and my prescription has gotten steadily stronger, but no optometrist or ophthalmologist I've ever gone to has said "you should start learning braille soon."
Eventually, you'll probably end up needing bifocals or even trifocals, but you are not going blind unless there's something seriously wrong with your eyes, like glaucoma.

I am not a professional but I have a sister who is severely myopic. She is 39 now and her eyes are stable. She worries ever time she goes to the doctor that her eyes will get worse. She can't, nor could she ever, see more than 5 inches away.
DO WHAT YOUR DOCTOR TELLS YOU TO DO. They have seen a lot of cases and know what they are talking about. Your parents do not want anything to happen to your eyes so they try to instill a HEALTHY fear in you...not to be mean. They want what's best for you and your Dr. does to. LISTEN TO THEM! You can be stable for many years if you do what they say.
