www.myopia.org
I was surfing on Google and I found this site. It states some interesting stuff on myopia... I was wondering what your opinion was on it. I personally think this website is a load of crap鈥ol
I just think it鈥檚 crazy that they suggest that parents should do eye tests on their own children and order these special glasses that are conveniently sold on the same web site.
You can just tell it is a scam read this following statement 鈥淭he International Myopia Prevention Assn. is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to informing the public about myopia prevention. These products are offered for you here only because they have been suppressed by the eye doctors and optical industry, making them next to impossible for you to get anywhere else.鈥?
But then posted at the bottom of the billing page it says 鈥淣ote that your credit card statement will show billing by IMPA鈥?
Hmmm I wonder where the money is going???
I think that this website is dangerous because it is encouraging people to stop going to the eye doctors and buy these 鈥渃ontraptions鈥?for their children. It is very important that children have eye exams鈥?Some eye conditions may have lasting effects on a child鈥檚 vision if not diagnosed and treated by a certain age.
Myopia is not caused by wearing glasses鈥?I wore glasses as a child and I do not need them anymore鈥? And the amount of time I spend on the computer and reading I should be blind by now if it was true that excessive "near" work caused myopia.
When you wear glasses the lenses just bend the light so it falls onto your retina so you can see clearly. They do not change the anatomy of the eye and I have seen no solid scientific research to prove otherwise. that i should of worn reading glasses when I experience myopia? it's scary to think that wearing glasses makes my vision worst when it helps me see things clearer. I don't know who to believe now. the eye doctor says to wear glasses when i can't see. this site says that glasses makes the vision worst. Wearing glasses does not make your eyes worse - it just reduces eye strain and helps you to see the way you should. There are various things that some doctors recommend (usually at younger ages but the 'research' results are varied) that some claim can help myopes. These include: wearing plus powered glasses, wearing special glasses with pinholes, eye exercises, vitamin supplements . . . the list goes on. There doesn't seem to be any one method that works for everyone (esp. longterm) and often none of them work for anyone.
I haven't visited the site yet but I will definitely stop by for a look. Wearing glasses makes your eyes dependent on them, thus making vision worse. There is a lunatic fringe at the edge of the eye care world, who believes that ALL myopia can be treated without myopia glasses or refractive surgery. What you find "interesting", I find amusing. Please, please do not fall for the scam. As a classmate and colleague once said to me, "It's all Pins-In-Dolls" referring to the movie depictions of voodoo. How the site ever qualified for a ".org" extension is a question that I might post in another category. There are more or less...three types of refractive eye problems. Normal or emetropic means that the eye is focused clearly at a far distance, or optical infinity. This is when the eye is relaxed. It's not using energy to focus.
That means that the light from beyond 20-30 feet is focused and one can see clearly.
The second is when the eye, when relaxed, is too powerful when compaired to 'normal'. This means that the lens system, the cornea and the lens inside the eye, together focus light in front of the retina. The more powerful the lens system, the closer to the lens, or the more the light rays bend. So these people have light rays focused in the middle of the eye. That means that in order to see far away, they'll need glasses or contacts or some type of lens to move the focus of the eye back onto the surface of the retina. Those glasses are thinner in the middle than the outside, and make things look smaller. These people are MYOPIC. And being near sighted isn't a disease any more than being blonde or being tall or whatever race, etc. Yes there are extremes but we're not talking about those kinds of problems. The power of the eye is related to how close the eye sees when relaxed and the formula is P=1/d where d is the distance in meters. If one's eye is already focused at one meter, or 39 inches or so, that'd be 1/1 or 1.00. This person would need a -1.00 to move the focal point to infinity and see clearly way far away. If they were focused at a half meter, that'd be 1/one half or 1/.5=2. So they'd need a -2.00 lens to move their focal point out to infinity. -3.00 would be a third of a meter in front of the eye. -5.00 would be the lens used for someone already focused at a fifth of a meter in front of their eye...
The third is people that have a weak lens systems. The light rays in this type of eye are focused behind the eye, or further away from the lens, so far that they don't bend as much as they should, so these people see blurry just like the myopic one's do if they don't focus their own lens by themeselves.. They can work and bend their own lens to move that focal plane up to the retina. These are far sighted, or hyperopic.
So anyone that can CURE myopia. WOW. That'd be like being cured of being a bird, or cat or fish or whatever, and being that specific type of bird or cat or fish or bug or .....
Pinhole glasses work because the central light rays going through any lens, don't deviate at all. So if you remove the power of the lens, things get 'clearer'. That's why near sighted or myopic eyes see 'better' if one squints, or looks through a small hole, or pinch one's fingers to make a little hole.
The outer light rays that bend, are eliminated, leaving just the central ones. The very center of the lens is flat, like looking through a plate glass window....both surfaces are flat, and parallel....just like the center of a lens. I agree with "ILoveMySon"...its nothing short of a load of crapola.
You can't believe everything you read. I don't subscribe to this new-age hippy crap and for the love of God, don't give them your credit card. If its a non-profit organization, why would they need your card number?
There's a sucker born every minute...I think its more frequently than that!!!
**Side note** If you click on the link for the National Myopia Prevention Programme, and go click on the button for "Your Eyes" there is a section of FAQ's. And in there, they state that myopia cannot be prevented. This was a link that was listed near the top of their page and on this link, it mentions NOTHING abourt being able to prevent myopia.
I guess for those who are conspiracy theorists, they would eat this garbage up...but its a big stinky load of crap... ilovemyson and willow are right on.
that website is total crap. anyone who claims there is a "worldwide conspiracy" among *ALL* eye doctors EVERYWHERE all over the world...think about the probability of that.
yeah...no. dont fall for it. |
