Myopia/Nearsighted question?

I wear contacts and glasses and currently my prescription is
-1.50 and it doesn't seem like that much compared to -5.00 ect.. my friends think I am crazy when I say I can't see that far away. anyways on a scale of 1 to 10 how bad is my eyesight? and if I don't wear glasses will my eyes get worse??

Seriously, you have to read this. Shocking, scary, but true.

Mine is about -7.5 and is 20/400 so yours is not that bad at all. Depending on how old you are it could get allot worse over time or it won't at all. Wearing glasses will actually make your eyes weaker since the lens is doing the focusing for your eye

The way that the 'power' is determined, is by the formula one over the distance in meters.
P=1/d

This means that if you are focused nearer than far away, infinity so to speak which would be more than 20-30 feet as far as the eye goes, you'd be 'near sighted'.

Actually you can't see beyond that point clearly at all, but can see from that distance closer just fine.

So if you were focused one meter away, the power of the lens you'd need would be a -1.00.

If you were focused at a half meter, one over onehalf = 2. So the power of the lens you'd need to "weaken" your focus would be a -2.00.

If you were focused at a third of a meter, that'd be a 3, so a -3.00 would be used to focus you further away.

a -10.00 would focus someone who's eyes couldn't see further than 10 cm or 1/10 of a meter and that would be really nearsighted. The lenses to correct this would be very thin in the center and very wide at the outside. They make the eyes look small to anyone looking at that person.

Actually your eyes are "too powerful" and those minus lenses are used to weaken the focus.

Someone who is farsighted would actually have weak eyes so that the focal point of his/her eyes would be behind the eye instead of right on the retina. The focal point of nearsighted people is a certain distance in front of the eye.

The farsighted person needs help to focus the lens or make the lens system of the eye stronger. So this type of person would need plus lenses to move the focus of the eye up towards or onto the retina. These look like magnifying glasses.

People who have high levels of myopia -6.00 and beyond have really powerful eyes or lenses or lens systems in their eyes. They focus light from infinity so close to the lens itself that the focal point is way in front of the retina. This focal plane is moved back towards the retina by using the minus type of lens.

If you don't wear correction, glasses or contacts, your eyes will just be blurry at distance. It doesn't hurt a camera to take a picture without focusing. You just get a blurry picture. The film doesn't really care, it just "sees" what the lens system gives it. Like when using binoculars.
One focuses the lens a little too much and gets a blur, then too little and get another blurr, then move back the other way till the focal plane is just right and one can see clearly.

If you are still in the early stages of myopia - that is to say - you have only just got glasses - and you throw your glasses away, then yes it is very possible for your eyes to recover by themselves. *Remember those 'rebillious' kids at school who refused to wear glasses, and mysteriously, they no longer need glasses anymore?* Unfortunately, if you have been wearing glasses for a long time, there's a little more to it... (but still worthwhile). Go to www.iblindness.org to see how to recover perfect vision.
