Anyone familiar with desmin myopathy(myofibrillar myopathy)? Causes, prognosis. drug treatment, muscles? It is a pretty uncommon condition caused by a mutation of a essential protein that gives support to the tiny fibers that makes our muscles strong. A mutation of this fiber would cause dysfunction of the muscle. It is characteristic of this condition to cause weakness of hands and feet before shoulders and hips (common in other myopathies). There is no definitive treatment. The patients need evaluation and monitoring by cardiologist because they can have cardiac arrythmias. The prognosis changes from one patient to another, but in general they live for years. |
