Can you use nicotine replacement therapy in the acute phase of a myocardial infarction?

I had a Myocardial Infarction in 2004 and whilst waiting for Angioplasty and Stenting I was allowed Nicotine gum (I only used it for a week then gave that up to) I haven't smoked since 12th July 2004......................Go for it!

why did you wait to have myocardial infarction (or in the acute phase) before finally deciding about quitting smoking (or at least replacing with nicotine therapy)

unless you have been on therapy long before the phase started. if you are under medication, then the therapy might be contraindicated so you have to quit it. people complain it's hard, it IS hard -- but would you rather have a heart attack or suffer withdrawal symptoms?

these will only work if you really want them to work and want to stop smoking

the ACUTE part means happening NOW, and I don't know to many ER docs that let people have the nicotine patch while they are trying to save there life.

Nicotine patches can cause the heart to beat faster and the damaged muscle (myo= muscle, cardial= heart, infarction= death) may not cope well with it.
Ask your doctor when it will be safe to use nicotine patches.

Acute Myocardial Infarction is a medical emergency.
Once you have an M.I,you must stop ALL forms of nicotine.
ln the acute phase,while the patient is still hospitalised and at risk of another M.I,allowing a nicotine patch would quite defeat the purpose of healthcare,like using a sieve to catch water leaking from a basket.
40% of post-M.I patients die in the 1st 4 weeks after the M.I,so it's a rather dicey condition,although 60% survive.But lifestyle changes (including stopping smoking ) are essential.
Nicotine patches have no place in the management of M.I.
So it has to be cold- turkey,sorry! But while in hospital,they get over the worst withdrawal symptoms.
