If a patient has past history of latex allergy, would you code v15.07 in his next hospital admission?

This patient was admitted to hospital with a myocardial infarction, how would a coder deal with coding this when this patient had a past history of latex allergy?

First... the latex allergy needs to be investigated. If I were coding it for the next admission, I would cover my butt, and code it as it were an actual allergy. In my experience, the majority of people consider an allergy to be nothing more than an adverse reaction. If this person had dry, itchy skin from latex, it is not an allergy. If they had blisters from latex... it is a potential allergy. If they had trouble breathing after exposure to latex.... THAT IS AN ALLERGY! It always makes me laugh when people tell me that the are allergic to codeine, morphine, or demerol because it made them "throw up." That is a side effect, not an allergy! Latex has that same unfortunate property of skin irritation.
If I were you, I would cover MY butt, and code it as an allergy. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
