Is a Pulmonary Embolism the same thing as a heart attack?

I'ms tudying for a fnial, and I know a myocardial infarction is the same thing as a heart attack, and the pulmonary embolism is incredibly similar to both in definition. I'm looking for somebody to clarify for me.

Thanks guys. that cleared it up. the pulmonary part shoulda given it away.

A pulmonary embolism is a blood clot in the lung, which will certainly kill you but it's not a heart attack.

Not the same. A pulmonary embolism is essentially a blood clot that travels to the lungs and restricts the blood supply, so that oxygen cannot be gotten by the person, and carbon dioxide cannot be removed.

except that one is lack of blood supply to the heart muscle, and the other is lack of blood supply to lung tissue....

no a MI is usually due to an occlussion of a coronary artery, you lose blood supply to areas of the HEART which becomes ischemic and eventually results in tissue necrosis. A pulmonary embolism is usually a blood clot thrown up into circulation (like from the leg) and goes through the heart and becomes lodged in the LUNG (first small capillary bed) causing ischemia and tissue necrosis.

not the same at all! a pulmonary emboli is a clot in the lungs.

Pulmonary = lungs
Coronary = heart
Renal = kidneys
Cerebral = brain
