I fell off a horse today - I am in SO much pain - the ER said it is muscle only, is it a strain? |
I didn't break anything. But I hit the ground hard. I first felt pain by my lower back - then on my right hip - which is what I fell on - the horse was running when I fell. It feels like the muscles don't want to expand and move for me when I do, they feel tight and it is worse with the ice - but they said i must do it for swelling... I am very stiff and I am starting to get sore in more places. They gave me vicodin but it only helped a little for about 2 hours. I can take it every six. They told me to ice it and I just put on icy hot. So with the way I hit the ground - is it a muscle strain? I would like a name for the injury so I can look it up more online.... If you fell today, you will feel much sorer tomorrow. Ice is correct bit not icy-hot, Use ice packs for the first 24 hrs, this decreases swelling which is causing the pain. After 24 hrs use heat such as a heating pad, this will bring the white blood cells to the injured area and "eat up" the cells that have been injured by swelling. Vicodin is a pain killer that works be altering your perception of pain in the brain. May have better luck with Motrin as this will actually decrease the inflammation of tissues injured by the fall. You should be able to look up traumatic strains/sprains on webmd. Good luck! It is hard to say what exactly the injury is, not having more details or witnessing it first hand. As you tumbled off a running horse it would probably be hard to describe anyway. It is possible to see exactly which muscles may be strained or if any other joint damage has occurred with some physical testing. Without actually doing a physical assessment it is hard to say, but there is likely a nerve with some pressure on it, which is what would be causing so much pain. Make sure that you apply actual ice over the swelling, not just a topical cream. Make sure you ice for 15 minutes at a time with at least a 15 minute break in between. it seems to be a contusion and there is spasm over the muscles .. if it is more than two-days please start moving your hip up and down then left to right with ice packs applied before moving i think this should help |
