How long does it take a knee muscle strain to heal?

I jogged (on and off) a 3 mile walk this morning. While I was running up the hill, my left knee (which I injured in college in a same way) started hurting but I kept going. By the end and after the walk, I could not walk without discomfort. When I jog, when I go downstairs, I'm having terrible pain in the muscle near my knee. It is uncomfortable for me to walk and my knee feels weak. A knee brace seems to help but I'm not sure what's wrong. I'm pretty sure its a strain but how long does this take to heal? And what should I do for the next couple days?

Muscle strains take 4-6 weeks to heal providing you do not have a re-injury in that time...if you do then you are back at day 1 of healing. In that time you can help the muscle to heal by doing some gentle stretching of the muscle on a daily basis, place an ice bag directly on the skin over the area that hurts for 15 mins. You will start to feel improvement in about 3 wks but its important to know that the muscle is not completely healed and you need to wait minimum of 4 wks before going back to any strenuous activity such as running. I am not convinced that you have a muscle strain though. Some of the symptoms you describe don't add up to a muscle strain. Treat the injury as I described above. If you continue to have problems after 2-3 wks then go see a doctor and get a proper diagnosis on the knee.

I recently injured my knee too, while playing soccer. My knee feels weak too and it has been about 3 weeks. From what I have learned it can take up to 6-8 weeks for a mild knee injury to completely heal and if it is more serious your knee may never be at full strength again. Sort of depressing huh? I am exercising my knees with squats and other weight lifting exercises to strengthen it, and I have read that one of the most difficult things is to learn to trust your knee again so I am trying to run around and start playing soccer again just not very intensely. If the pain is mild or if there is swelling try taking some acetomeniphine and use ice packs, if the severe pain continues I would suggest going to a doctor. Good luck and I hope you recover quickly and completely.

It can take weeks for a muscle strain to heal. Bowenwork or mild massage therapy can speed up the healing proccess.
