What causes weight and muscle loss in COPD?
While the reasons for weight and muscle loss in COPD are not completely understood, experts believe that it happens because of a combination of factors. These include:

Using more energy overall (perhaps due to the increased energy required to breathe).
Using more energy during physical activity.
Eating less because of shortness of breath. Shortness of breath may make it difficult to shop for, prepare, and eat foods.
The need for oral corticosteroids, which increase the breakdown of muscle tissue in the body.
Less interest in food. People who have COPD may be depressed (causing a lack of interest in eating) or may be taking medications that reduce appetite.
The possibility that COPD may reduce oxygen levels in the blood. This can prevent your body from using food properly.
Poor eating habits and nutrition also contribute to weight loss. In older adults, the cost of food and being isolated from others also play a role in poor eating habits.

Muscle loss can occur from insufficient protein in the diet, too little exercise of large muscles, or too much light exercise. That is not a disorder, its your body adapting to what you do.

Most people who are overweight have too much fat, either in the torso and around organs, or under the skin.

Probably the main treatment is some exercise involving the large muscles, and addition of small protein snacks thru the day.

All cells in your body are constantly breaking down. Your cells, including your muscles, need replenishing from nourishing food every day. In order to prevent muscle loss, you have to move around, or they will atrophy, or waste away. You also need proteins in your diet. If you are a vegetarian, you need to stick to a strict plan that shows you how to combine certain foods to make a complete protein. A protein contains a combination of amino acids. Vegetables have only a part of the combination, as does grains, legumes, and other foods.

There are many diseases that lead to muscle loss. you need to see a doctor for testing.

Once thing that can cause muscle loss is hyperthyroidism.
