Mumps, please help me out here, im in a spot of trouble n need serios help please!!!!!?

ok, i woke up this morning n felt terrible, i found it hard to speak n every time i went to swallow my saliva it hurt like i was tryin to swallow an object to big down my throat. my old man thinks it might b mumps. my salivary glands, the ones below and infront of my ears are bigger than normal i think, coz i cant remember them being this big before n they hurt a great deal every time i touch them. every time i swallow it hurts. im on pain killers and all, but my main question is this. even if it is mumps, will this mean i can not drink alcohol? are these the signs of mumps? professional medical advice would b appreciated.

Thanks allot guys,

Tom, 16, Melbourne Australia

One of the old "classic" diagnostic tests for mumps: suck a pickle! If you double up in agony, it's almost certainly confirmed...
Based on your symptoms, it sounds highly suspicious. Please see a medical provider promptly. One big concern you might have is the possibility of having to have your testicles on an icepack for a couple days!!!; mumps can cause sterility in adult males. (No, you *cannot* have a drink to calm your nerves. Booze is frankly a bad idea for any infectious illness.) Drink plenty of liquids, rest, and get yourself to the clinic.
P.S.: What painkillers?--something over-the-counter, like aspirin or acetaminophen (what the British call paracetamol)? Hope you're not using old left over codeine or comparable meds; too risky; there's no telling what you've got.

Mups to an adult can be serious- please see a doctor

Known complications of mumps include:
Infection of other organ systems
Sterility in men (this is quite rare, and mostly occurs in older men)
Mild forms of meningitis (rare, 40% of cases occur without parotid swelling)
Encephalitis (very rare, rarely fatal)
Profound (91 dB or more) but rare sensorineural hearing loss, uni- or bilateral.
Please see the webpages for more details on Mumps.
