Is this mumps? |
There's been a recent outbreak of mumps where I live. But, I thought I was safe since I had 2 doses of the measles/mumps/rubella vaccine in 2001. They said I'd be ok too. But then, since yesterday, I have trouble opening my mouth and I have pain on the left side of my cheek and upper tooth area. My cheek seems to look a bit swollen too. I have no other symptoms yet. If it's not mumps, what else could it be? Yes, it could be mumps. Although the vaccine is effective in protecting against mumps, it only works in 95% of people. In fact, inthe large Midwestern outbreak last year, over 2/3 of the cases had been fully immunized. There are a number of things that can cause symptoms like that, but during the outbreak, the chances of it being caused by mumps are greater. A physician will better be able to diagnose you and tell you if it is mumps or not. Until you know for sure, you should not attend work or school for 9 days after the swelling started. In addition, call ahead to the doctor's office. That way, they can tell you what you should do when you get there to keep from exposing other patients. They could ask you to put on a mask, use a side door, or come in after hours. |
