Does the mumps cause sterility? How?

Mumps is still common in many parts of the world and getting a vaccination to prevent mumps is important.
Have you heard of sterile cases who had mumps in the past?

Thank you all for your answers. I went and searched about orchitis. In addition it said: while mumps is perhaps the most well known etiology, other viruses including coxsackie and influenza viruses may be associated with orchitis.
So be careful with the flu!

Maybe if temperature rises too much and stem cells are killed, during orchitis.

you dont hear of the mumps as much anymore since they have the vaccine for it but yes I have heard of it causing men to go sterile.

If an adult male comes down with the mumps it can cause sterility. Actually its not the mumps, but a secondary condition that causes the problem - Viral orchitis. Most cases of viral orchitis are the result of mumps. About one-third of males who contract the mumps after puberty develop orchitis during the course of the mumps, usually four to six days after onset. The mumps virus can spread from the salivary glands to other parts of the body, including the testicles.
In rare cases, orchitis can impair fertility; however, if orchitis affects only one testicle, sterility is rare. Without a lot of technical jargon, which I don't understand - "orchitis can really mess up your stuff".

i heard if you get it at puberty or adulthood it will cause sterility. how? sorry i dont know.

Cause swelling of testicles if you get it in right place and stops you from producing sperm but you have to get in both of them.

My Uncle Andrew had the mumps before I was born and he was sterile,I think it causes sterility in men because in some cases it some how gets into their testicles.
