Multiple Sclerosis and Myelin question? |
So, multiple sclerosis destroys myelin, but how exactly does that disrupt an electrical impulse traveling along the neuron? As far as I'm informed the axon itself will be affected/damaged through repeated demyelination. However, even if the impulse would just travel along the axon instead of jumping from one ranvier node to the other, the speed would be severely affected. I guess you can compare it to Star Trek like beaming from one point to another as opposed to a person walking the same distance - and I could imagine the impulse would fade out before it reached its destination. In my uneducated understanding of it, the electrical impulse "leaks" out of the neuron where the myelin sheath is damaged. The sheath is there to contain it and if damaged, can't do it's job properly. I'm sure there is a far more scientific way of putting it but that's how I've always understood it. nerve conduction is achieved by the exchange of sodium and potassium ions in a linear fashion along the length of the axon.......the myelin gives order and direction to this pathway. When there is no myelin, there is less linear flow of ions and the flow could go in any direction.....or it could be lost to the immediate environment. the myelin sheaths insulate the axons so they keep the current in them. So perhaps the impuse would be disrupted because of the escaped current? |
