Can Multiple Sclerosis drive you insane? |
clinically speaking.... can the damage done to your brain from Multiple Sclerosis drive you insane? or to behave outrageously without control? just want to add that i was diagnosed with MS about 5 years ago, just feel like i am losing my marbles sometimes. my mood swings are so bad, even with medicine from my neurologist. just wondering if anyone had a similar experience with diminished mental health and MS. >>>Different people deal with this disease differently>>some can cope with it and some can't>>it all depends on the individual My uncle has MS, and I can tell you secondhand that ANYTHING that devastating has to cause some sort of mental pain. I don't think MS causes mental illness first-rate, but possibly as an outcome of the disease itself. Honestly, when I saw my uncle try to move 10 feet, it was brutal. It took him about 20 minutes just to walk this distance. Just from that, how could somebody NOT go insane from this disease? Absolutely NOT! No, it will not drive you insane, but mood swings as you're experiencing them do happen. It is often difficult to determine how much the mood swings are caused by damage done to your brain and how much are caused by the fact that you are dealing with a severe illness. I have had MS for two years now and I see a psychiatrist. All my friends who have MS also see a psychiatrist for medication to help them to stabilize their moods. I have never ever heard of anyone becoming insane from MS. Your neurologist is not a specialist in mood disorders and he/she should be referring to a good psychiatrist and psychologist. Some studies have linked MS to manic depression but it seems that most people with MS seem to suffer from depression. Having your neurologist treat you mood swings is like hiring a plumber to fix an electrical problem. I am very sorry you are having a difficult time. I attend a support group for people with MS and find it very helpful. Perhaps that would help you out as well. |
