Type 1 diabetic multiple medications? |
OK, I am not looking for advice on how to eat, exercise etc, etc I see my diabetes educator 3 times a week , my Endocrinologist every 2 months plus my internal medicine doc. So I am well taken care of, I have been a type 1 diabetic for 12 years and 4 years ago I had a baby and was diagnosed with Graves disease soon after her birth. I have had the radioactive iodine treatment for my thyroid because my glucose levels were so high; I have changed my insulin for the old R & NPH to the Novolog and Lantus. My glucose levels are still high we have seen a small drop in the levels going from an average of 400-600 down to 200-400 usually in the high 300 to low 400 is where we are at now. I have had T-3 &T-4 blood tests and the thyroid hormone is pretty much gone we have not started the replacement hormone yet. Now this being said I had a talk with my internal medicine doctor a couple of days ago and he wants to put me on a medication that people with type 2 diabetes use. Is this normal, I have never heard of this and was wondering if anyone else had. If anyone knows someone who has done this or what the results might be. Sure I will let you know what he says. As far as the pump I looked into it and just didn't like the idea of sleeping and well...... you know with this machine next to me. I suggest the insulin pump by medtronic along with exercise, check medtronic.com for more answers and better control of your diabetes. lantus i use that i was just put on it and it doesn't seem to do a good job i rekon lol. and i have never heard of putting a type 1 diabetic on type 2 medication and i can't see how that will help you more for the fact that type 2 the pracreas generally still works abit where ours doesn't work at all. so i have never heard of it at all.you should ask ur doc why he/she thinks it wud be a good idea and how it will benifit u and hey when u do find out let me know lol coz like i said i never heard of it and i'm intrested now I have heard of type 2 getting type 1 meds but never vise versa. Endocrinologist is the specialist in the insulin so go by his suggestions. I would never let the pediatrician recommend a change in my sons insulin it is not their specialty. I understand your fears for the pump always having something stuck to you but I can tell you this my son was 8 months when diagnosed and after he turned 8 years old and we were lucky if we got a week or two with good numbers a opportunity for a pump study was offered to us. The diabetes educator/ pump specialist had my sons numbers regulated using Humalog (starts working in 10 min) also using Lantis (AKA poor mans pump) within 3 weeks. I think the type of insulin and your educators knowledge goes a long way. With the pump we only insert this little tube once every 3 days reduces in injections. The pump trickles your medication and acts as if your pancreas would. Not to mention the flexibility we now have with meals and such. It has given my son a much better life no more sorry cant have cake at your party or he cant attend his sugar is too high. You may want to rethink it truly has changed our lives for the better. Good luck. have you been check for celiac its a condition that fits your symptom's plus try symlin its new and goes with your insulin I'm not sure if my answer will be of any help to you, but to share with you what I know from my own personal experience, and not from technical point of view: |
