Rehab for movement disorder throat so can removed peg tube feeding?

8/2005 husband 's swallowing became limited becaue of either movement disorder or parkinsonian symptoms caused by seizures and depakote medicine for treatment. Got worse due to severe aspiration pneumonia causing congestive heart failure. Peg tube feeding is all he has now. I would be so happy even if he could just supplement the Peg tubing with some oral food/liquid.

Sore throat is usually due to a viral infection. Gargling with warm salty water or mouthwash can reduce the pain and inconvenience. More details and home remedies available at http://ailments.in/sorethroat.html

You should continue to bring your concerns to his health care providers. You could ask for another swallowing evaluation from the speech-language pathologist. Have him or her explain what exactly is happening when your husband swallows. Suggest a diagram.

Aspiration pneumonia is very serious but there are swallowing techniques that might be used to reduce his risk. What does he want to do? What's his attention like? and What is his sensation level?
You might have to accept that he may not be a candidate for those therapies though especially if he's at late stage Parkinson's.

Honey, if he has Parkinson's, I'm afraid it won't be safe for him to take food or fluids orally. A speech therapist could evaluate him and work with him if it's possible, and doctors can perform swallowing studies, although if he's been evaluated and found unable to progress with therapy, it would be unsafe and no use for them to try again.
I'm sure it's stressful for you, and for him too, but that's the progression of the disease. I'm glad he's done well with the peg feedings.
