What is " Stereotypic movement disorder?

A repetitive abnormal movement that is unvoluntary . For example , a patient would suddenly lift his arm and turn his head to the left and kick with his leg , then go back to do whatever he was doing . He would not know why he did that particular movement . After some time , the same pattern movement would occur again and so on . It is common in diseases affecting the basal ganglia .
It is sometimes painful for the patient because such movements frequently cause people to laugh .
Sometimes they are mistaken for 'tantrums " in children .
It might also be acquired from drug abuse .

Stereotypic movement disorder is characterized by repetitive, non-functional motor behavior that has lasted at least 4 weeks. Certain drugs sometimes cause this condition, but symptoms last for a shorter period of time or stop when the offending medication is discontinued.
